This article introduces and explains the various aspects of the Imago Portal Imagery page and how they relate. You will learn how to use the:
- Browse Workspaces panel to select one or more Collections.
- Active Imagery panel to select Imagery Type(s) and associated Image Types, Features and Labels.
- Light Table to view, navigate and work with your images, including:
- Navigating and selecting an image
- Add and edit Features.
- Add measurable Feature segments to an image
- Change how images are sized
- Change Imagery layout and
- Other options.
- Information Panel to view (and edit) information about the selected image.
- Show Prediction Models.

1. Imagery Page
After logging in, the Imagery page is displayed, the first option on the main Menu. The Imagery Page is the default page after logging in.
2. Browse Workspaces Panel

The left hand-side of the page consists of two areas. Browse Workspaces is the first step to viewing imagery. It provides the means to find and select imagery and is based and ordered on the defined Imago hierarchy. In essence, this is (with Workspaces the highest in the hierarchy):
- Imagery Type(s)
- Image Type(s)
There can be more than one Workspace/Dataset/Imagery Type/Image Type/Collection. This is can be seen in the above image. A selection of Workspace/Dataset/Imagery Type and Collection must be made in order to view related images.
Let's take a closer look at how the data hierarchy is displayed in Browse Workspaces using the Firefly Resource Development as an example:
The Firefly Resource Development Workspace consists of several datasets:
- Drilling Chips;
- Drilling Core;
- Drilling Geophysics;
- Drilling Spectral and XRF;
- Reference Samples.
As you might expect, each Dataset has it's own Imagery Type. The Drilling Core Dataset , for example, consists of a number of Imagery Types :
- Core Boxes;
- Lithology and Alterations;
- Logs Scale 1-5 (1:5);
- Logs Scale 1-50 (1:50);
|Workspace, Dataset, Imagery Type, Image Type and Collection are data types that fall within a defined data hierarchy. When creating a data element based on one of these data types, it can be any name you wish.|
To give you an understanding, here are example images (displayed on the Light Table) from three of the above Imagery Types (click an image to enlarge):

Any type of imagery may be added for display alongside the core or chip images. For example:
- Geophysical logs;
- Televiewer images;
- Hyperspectral or images representing XRF readings, to name a few.
3. Active Imagery Panel
Let's see how Browse Workspaces changes when an Imagery Type (Core Boxes) is selected in the Firefly Resource Development Workspace:
- After selecting Core Boxes, a list of Collections is displayed (drillholes).
- AADD0141 is selected
- The Active Imagery area is populated with Image Types, Logs, Features and any other data elements associated with the Collection.
- Wet and Dry are Image Types. The Wet image type is selected.
- Core trays are then displayed on the Light Table.
- The Core Condition Feature is selected.
- Digitized (on the Imago Portal) lines/polygons are displayed, colour coded to specific Feature Types. These have been configured for the demonstration site:
The Browse Workspaces panel can be compressed/expanded by clicking the down arrow at the top right corner of the panel:
4. Light Table
This is your workplace. Think of it as a photographers light table, where images are displayed and edited, including adding Features and Labels.
Let's look at the some of the elements of the Light Table:
1. Show/Hide Workspace Panel
Click to show or hide the Datasets Browser. Workspaces Browser and Active Imagery areas are collectively known and Datasets Browser. Hiding the Datasets Browser is useful when screen resolution is small.
2. Toggle Editing On/Off
Click to toggle editing on or off. With editing on, interactive editing such as adding Features and other aspects are allowed.
3. Show Light Table/Image Gallery/Map
Click to change the display:
4. Navigate Images
Use these buttons to navigate the active image (yellow surrounding box) to another image:
5. Select (Add) a Feature
Click and select from a list of Features for the chosen Feature in the Active Imagery Panel:
As Core Condition is selected in the Active Imagery Panel, Select Feature is displayed in the bottom right corner. When clicked, the list is populated with the associated Features Types. Notice the digitized outlines associated with Core Condition are also displayed overlaying the selected core tray:
Features Types for the selected Feature are displayed as a solid line on the active image and dashed lines on all other images:
By selecting an option from the list, Imago enters add mode (digitize) which allows the feature to be added as an overlay on the active image.
After a selection has been made, the selected Feature is displayed and the background colour is changed.
Any editing (insert/delete points, delete feature. See Edit a Feature) actions also apply to the selected Feature on the selected image.
a. Add Feature Type Polygon
By default, Imago places is in add/digitize mode and the cursor is changed to a cross-hair when moved over the active image.
Adding a Feature Type is straight forward. If the Feature Type is a polygon (as is the case with the Solid Feature Type), the steps are:
- Move the cursor to where the first point of the polygon is to start.
- Left-click the mouse.
- Move around the feature (clockwise or anticlockwise) and Left Click each time to add a points to the polygon:
- Right-click to end digitizing and close the polygon. The polygon is now associated with the Feature Type. There is no 'saving' required.
b. Add Feature Type Line
Adding a Feature Type which is a line is similar to adding a polygon. The difference is when right-clicking to end digitizing, the line is not closed to create a polygon:
6. Edit a Feature
There will be times where an added Feature Type will need to be edited. In all cases the image must first be selected and the Feature Type selected by Left-Clicking:
There are three choices:
a. Delete Point
- Hover the mouse over the point to be deleted and Left Click the point.
- Press del on the keyboard:
- The point is deleted and Imago moves to the next point to be deleted (large circle).
- Repeat steps 2-3 above to delete other points.
b. Insert Point
- Hover the mouse over the location on the Feature Type where a point is to be inserted.
- Press ins to insert the point.
c. Delete Feature
Press Alt+del and the selected Feature Type is deleted.
7a. Add a Note
Imago provides the means to add notes to the selected image. This is not tied to any Feature Type. Each note consists of a drawn line and associated text. This is useful where it may be important to record comments in relation to images.
- Select an image.
- Select Add a note:
- Hover the mouse over a start position of the line to be drawn.
- Hold Left-click and move the mouse to draw the line on the image.
- Release the mouse click.
- Enter the note text:
7b. Draw a Scaled Ruler
The purpose of the scaled rule is to define a scaled length for those Feature Types which are segments. When a scaled ruler is drawn, followed by adding a segment Feature Type, Imago will calculate the length and/or count for a line, or area and/or count for a polygon which then may be displayed alongside core when presented as downhole:
The scaled rule is based on the setting configured by the owner/administrator for the Workspace:
In this example, the ruler length is defined as 100 units (100cm).
For example, the steps to draw a scaled ruler are:
a. Click the ruler:
b. Click where the start location for the ruler (1).
c. Release the click and drag the mouse to the point where the ruler is to end (2).
d. Release the click:
The ruler is drawn (alternating black and white bars). This signifies to Imago, in this example, the ruler represents a length of 100 units (cms).
Defining the Ruler length in Imagery Type (earlier) and accurately drawing is critical because all digitising of features will be measured according to the ruler length.
8. Change how Images are Sized
Imago offers two ways of presenting images, Unsized and Sized. In essence, this means unscaled and scaled, the latter scaled to the length of, for examples, the core run in a core box.
So far we have been viewing images Unsized:
To change the light table to display images Sized, click Sized to see properly scaled images:
9. Change Imagery Layout
So far we have been viewing imagery displayed vertically. However, this can be changed to a horizontal display by clicking the Horizontal option:
10. More Options
There are three options:
a. Display Notes
Click to displays all notes added using the tool in Section 7a. For example:
b. Display Depth Scale
Click to display a Depth Scale alongside the images. This is usually on by default:
Make sure Sized is selected to ensure proper scaling downhole.
The above image shows Wet and Dry core trays and associated Colour Attributes:
Additionally, when the Depth Scale is displayed and the mouse is moved up or down anywhere on the Light Table, a thin horizontal yellow line follows the cursor displaying the current depth marker on the left-hand side of the line. This line is called the Depth Marker Line:
The size of the displayed depth marker font may appear small. Increase the zoom for your browser to increase this.
c. Display Scale Ruler
Click this option to display the scale ruler drawn at Section 7b:
The overall length of the scale is determined from the start and end depth of the collection.
11. Current Depth Window
Images are located according to the Current Depth Window on the Depth Scale.
To move the window to another Depth location, click the location on the Depth Scale. Images are then displayed for the new window on the Light Table:
The width of the bar depends on the zoom level of the Light Table. Using the mouse wheel:
- Zoom in: The bar range narrows.
- Zoom out: The bar range expands.
12. Selected Image
Click an image to select. The selected image is always identified by a thin yellow outline:
Selecting images allows us to trigger actions on them again, edit comments, add or modify features. If the image is selected them the information tab will provide the data related to the image.
13. Scroll Independent Drillholes
It is possible to move imagery up or down, for example to align with the depth scale. To do this:
- Hover the cursor over some imagery.
- Press the CTRL Key on the keyboard while hold left clicking the mouse.
- Drag the imagery down or up with the mouse.
- Release both when satisfied.
14. Image Information
Select to view information for the selected image.
The Imagery Tab displays information associated with the all aspects of an image created/modified on the Imago Portal:
Displays details of Workspace, Dataset, Collection, Depth from and to, Spatial and Imagery Type.
2. Custom Attributes
Displays all Attributes associated with the image.
3. Associated Images
Shows thumbnails for all associated images. Click a thumbnail to display the image on the Light Table.
Displays all Notes associated with the selected image. A new Note can be added by entering text in the box and pressing Enter. This a general note for the image, not to be seen on the image itself. For adding a note visible in the image please see the 7a. Add a Note section of this article.
5. Download Selected Image
Download the image to the local computer.
6. Get a URL link to the Selected Image
Get a shareable URL link to the selected image. Note, the person using this link must have credentials to sign in to the Imago Portal.

2. Update Actions
Clicking this option re-triggers the action(s) associated with the single image e.g:
- Crop the image with the previously created cropping polygons or
- Extract the main colour of the image..
